OCR: ROBOTS IN FILM Recently, researchers have seriously started to THE LAWS OF ROBOTICS explore a theory that first appeared in science fiction: INTERPLANETARY SPACECRAFT the use of propulsion systems based on the matter/ antimatter principle. Scotty, the mechanic on the now- classic "Star Trek" TV series, would undoubtedly just shrug and say that the Intergalactic Federation has relied on matter/antimatter propulsion systems for years. But today it does seem that such systems might actually one day enable spacecraft to reach incredible speeds ... perhaps even rivaling that of Captain Kirk's famous Starship Enterprise- DE TED STATES OF AMERICA The Forward Antimatter Engine The Forward Antimatter Engine (FAE) was initially proposed in a study financed by the United States Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory in 1983. Unlike the antimatter systems described in science fiction that use antimatter to annihilate matter, the FAE uses a small amount of antimatter to "heat" a large volume of matter. The energy released during this process far exceeds that produced by fusion/fission nuclear generators. And the FAE could be adapted for building direct propulsion reactors. MARS BETAT
