But today it does seem that such systems might actually one day enable spacecraft to reach incredible speeds ... perhaps even rivaling that of Captain Kirk's famous Starship Enterprise- DE TED STATES OF AMERICA The Forward Antimatter Engine The Forward Antimatter Engine (FAE) was initially proposed in a study financed by the United States Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory in 1983. Unlike the antimatter systems described in science fiction that use antimatter to annihilate matter, the FAE uses a small amount of antimatter to "heat" a large volume of matter. The energy released during this process far exceeds that produced by fusion/fission nuclear generators. And the FAE could be adapted for building direct propulsion reactors. MARS BETAT
